Service Description
The course will begin with the basics of journalism, including news-gathering and writing. The focus will then shift to the production of an audio news program of ten-to fifteen-minutes duration with an interview and one or two feature segments. A further outcome of the course will be to establish a format for a recurring Peach Pit podcast to be produced by youth clients under the supervision of staff, focusing on programs, activities, and people of the Peach Pit community and distributed to parents and students. Participants will analyze print and broadcast stories to identify the presence or absence of the various elements; assess the reliability of the narrative based on the sources used and whether they are identified or anonymous; ascertain whether the evidence addresses the premise of the article; and judge if the piece as a whole presents a compelling narrative with a beginning, middle and end. Participants will be introduced to the job roles involved, including producer (responsible for overseeing the entire product), researcher, writer, engineer, and on-air announcer. Over the course of the class, students will receive hands-on opportunities to try and practice each role. *Pizza is included!
